TIPS - BANKING AND SIN
Today we are
bringing information and tips about banking and how to get the Social Insurance
Number (SIN).
Social Insurance Number
As you
might already know, international students who would like to work in Canada
must first obtain a social insurance number, which is needed for tax reasons.
This number is linked with your work or study permit, so keep in mind that will
have the same expiry date.
As an
international student, you can only get your SIN number after getting your
study permit at the border or at the airport.
Remember not
to confuse this number with health care insurance since they are not related.
To apply
for this number there are different ways to do it:
- Go to a Service Canada office
- Apply online
- Apply by mail
If you
apply online or by mail and your application gets approved, you will receive a
letter with your SIN number within 20 business days.
Documents you need to apply:
- A study permit that indicates that you are authorized to work on and off campus or a work permit (e.i. co-op work permit).
- Passport
- Proof of address
